About Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening, also known as Gingivoplasty, is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves the contouring and reshaping of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to create a more appealing smile, but is also performed in conjunction with periodontitis treatment. When performed for the treatment of periodontal gum disease, a gingivoplasty removes and reshapes loose diseased gum tissue in order to reduce the depth of the dental pocket and help reattach the healthy gum to the tooth. Board-certified dentist, Dr. Todd McCracken, at Laser Smile Studio in Denton, TX performs this procedure with a soft tissue laser for lasting results and reduced discomfort.
The Benefits of Gingivoplasty
Crown lengthening procedures are extremely beneficial for patients suffering from severe periodontal gum disease and traditionally do not include an extended recovery period. Benefits of crown lengthening procedures include, but are not limited to the following:
- Crown lengthening typically requires only one treatment.
- There is usually no need for touch-ups following the initial procedure.
- Gingivoplasty assists in creating a wider, more visually appealing smile.
- The procedure eliminates diseased tissue, assisting in better overall health.
- Healing from the surgery does not usually require a lengthy recovery period.

What to Expect
Before beginning the procedure, Dr. McCracken may discuss numbing and sedation options with the patient. Although laser dentistry is noticeably less invasive and less painful, patients will be most comfortable if they are numbed for this procedure. Dr. McCracken will then use soft tissue lasers to carefully remove the excess or diseased gum from around the teeth. After this tissue is removed, a periodontal dressing will be placed over the removed gums to protect them as they begin healing. Initially, the gums will appear thick and abnormal. But as they heal, the gums will begin to thin and appear more natural.
Treatment Aftercare
Some light bleeding may occur immediately following the gingivoplasty, but typically subsides within 24 hours. In most circumstances, Dr. McCracken will recommend an antibacterial mouthwash and over the counter pain relievers which will ease pain and help prevent infection during the healing process. Most patients report total healing about 4-8 weeks of the procedure, but until then, soft foods are recommended, to prevent gum irritation. It is important to maintain a proper oral hygiene routine during this time while being mindful of the treatment site. Dr. McCracken can offer patients tips on caring for their teeth and gums during the healing process.
